Nachos @ Mel's Burger

nachos at Mel's Burgers from YummyNachos

What: Nachos (Tortilla Chips, Cheddar Cheese, Ground Beef, Salsa, Guacamole and Sour Cream)
How much: $12
Rating: 6
Overall review: These are good nachos that could be great nachos. The biggest problem is the toppings. They're not layered, so they cling to the top of the nachos and never mingle with the chips below. In fact, it was hard to pick up a chip without also taking the whole top. This made for a large plate of naked chips at the end. That said, the nicest touch was the addition of ground beef, which makes perfect sense for a place with great burgers.

Nachos @ Blue Haven

Restaurant: Blue Haven
Type: In-Betweeners
Price: $10.00
Ingredients: House Made Tortilla Chips, Hand Layered with Cheddar, Mozzarella, Black Olives and Jalapenos, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole and Sour Cream

Rating: 6

Brief Description: These nachos satisfied, but could've used a tad more TLC. The chips were home-made as advertised and tasty but the toppings were sparse. The two tablespoons of salsa on the side was a bit insulting as these nachos would've benefited from more and not less. In fact, drop the beans, which only added blandness, and add more salsa and pico de gallo.

Nachos @ Elke and Hugh's Place

Great nachos at Elke and Hugh's Turkey Fest! Bit size, individual nachos. Great idea for a party! Scoops filled with white bean turkey chili, four-cheese mac n'cheese homemade sauce, and topped with scallions.

A perfect 6!

Nachos at Saint Marks Ale House

Restaurant: Saint Marks Ale House

Location: 2 Saint Marks Place NY, NY

Type: Tex Mex Nachos

Ingredients: Grilled chicken, black beans, sliced jalapenos, diced tomatoes, monterey jack and cheddar cheese, sour cream, and guacamole.
Price: 10
Rating: 6

Brief Review: There are definitely things to admire about the Nachos at Saint Marks Ale House, particularly the cheese with its slightly burnt edges and it's overall greasiness. However, even with a strong layering of cheese and grease, these nachos quickly dry out due to the unimaginative topping distribution and overcooked chips. If you're on your fourth or fifth beer, then these will certainly hit the spot, but if you want to be fulfilled you may have to look elsewhere on the menu. Total in-betweeners!

Nachos at Flight 151

Restaurant: Flight 151

Location: 151 8th Avenue NY, NY
Type: Nachos
Cost: $8.95
Rating: 6

Brief Review: These were your typical bar food nachos, better to be eaten standing at the bar instead of sitting down at a table. The cheese and sour cream lasted until the final chip crumb, but the rest of the toppings were minimal and disappeared quickly. Portion size was OK, (or just in-betweeners ).  Two plates were needed to satisfy any real hunger. If a bar bite is what your looking for, then these nachos will do the trick.

Nachos at Diablo's Cantina

Restaurant: Diablo's Cantina
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Type: Four Cheese Nachos
Ingredients: Tortilla chips topped with four Mexican cheeses, scallions, guacamole, and sour cream.

Cost: $14
Rating: 6

Brief Description: Pretty good nachos with great homemade chips. Four cheeses on these chos, but one was cheese sauce and left the end of the plate soggy. Guacamole was acceptable, but not flavorful. Scallion rings added some flavor, but overall these nachos were bland. Thx HC for the rating!

Nachos at Paris Cafe

Restaurant: Paris Cafe
Location: New York, NY
Type: Nachos
Ingredients: Chips, chili, sharp cheddar, salsa, jalapeño, and sour cream

Cost: $ 9.00
Rating: 6

Description: Because the Paris follows one of the cardinal secrets of nacho making, cook your nachos on a metal plate, these nachos had some good qualities.  The chips had yummy burnt edges and the cheese was cooked nice and crispy.  Sadly, the salsa and guacamole came from a jar.  Also, there were way too many naked chips once the toppings were gone.  I should also add that The Paris was willing to experiment.  We were in the mood for some chicken on our nachos, and while they looked at us like were nuts, they did it anyway.  So points added there.

Nachos at Sidelines Sports and Karaoke Bar

Restaurant: Nachos at Sidelines Sports and Karaoke Bar
Type: Nachos Grandes
Ingredients: homemade tortilla chips, cheese, pork chili, jalapenos, guac, sour cream, lettuce, and pico de gallo.
Rating: 6

Description: if there's one place on the planet that should get a nachos pass it's Mexico. However, these chos did not live up to my expectations. Started out tasty. Too much topping early on, but not enough to last throughout the entire plate. Lots of naked chips.

Nachos at Virgil's BBQ

Restaurant: Virgil's BBQ

Location: 152 West 44th Street NY, NY
Type: Virgil's BBQ Nachos
Ingredients: Tortilla chips, BBQ sauce, pulled pork, beef, cheese, and jalapenos.

Cost: $12.25
Rating: 6

Brief Review:  Decent portion size and the cheese was tasty. However, the addition of BBQ sauce to the nacho plate was disastrous! Soggy chips and an overly sweet flavor. Some naked chips. Worse yet they weren't homemade! Missing some key nacho ingredients including sour cream, salsa, and guacamole. A good effort on the part of RPM Fall 2009!

6.20.2009: Nachos at Heartland Brewery

Restaurant: Heartland Brewery

Location: 35 Union Square at 17th Street, NYC

Type: Heartland Grande Tex Mex Nachos
Ingredients:
Jack and cheddar cheeses, salsa, beef and veggie chili, guacamole, sour cream and jalapeños
Cost: 10.95
Rating: 6

Brief Review: The presentation was encouraging and under it all was a cheese covered plate ( a secret to making great nachos). However, the flavors weren't there. No nacho could stand on its own - fork and knife required. Lots of soggy chips; efforts are needed to preserve the crispiness of the chips. Perhaps, less salsa and chili and more cheese and chip. Also, the portion size was a bit small for two.

6.12.2009: Nachos at Kate's Joint

Ingredients:
Cripsy tortilla chips topped with black beans, chili, cheese, jalapeños, salad, salsa, and dairy free sour cream.

Rating: 6

Brief Review: Too much bean and soupy. Less lettuce, more salsa. Needed some spice and salt, but survived as decent nachos sans salsa and guacamole. Good portion size.

Location: Sayreville, NJ
Type: Terence's 5 minute nachos
Ingredients: Corn tortillas, jack and cheddar cheese topped with salsa, sour cream, jalapeños, and beef chili with beans.

Brief Review: Really tasty nachos with Mom's homemade chili. The chips were outta a bag, the salsa was outta jar, but these nachos were cheesy, flavorful and the fresh jalapeños added that extra kick.

Brief Review: Kinda bland nachos. The toppings were nicely distributed throughout. However, the flavors still didn't come through. It didn't help that the chips were outta a bag.

Type: Super Nachos (with chicken)
Ingredients: "Homemade tortilla chips piled with cheese, black beans, guacamole, mild salsa, jalapeños & sour cream."

Brief Review: Bland nachos. They look delicious (especially when served on a paper plate!!), but in this case looks have deceived! These nachos were pretty much flavorless. These nachos could have definately used more salsa and salt.

7.12.2008: Nachos at Cooleys

Restaurant: Cooley's Stone House Tavern
Location: Cooperstown, NY
Type: Nacho Platter
Cost: ?
Ingredients: "Nachos topped with (beef) chili, jalapeño peppers, black olives, scallions, and cheddar cheese. Served with salsa and sour cream".

Rating: 6

Brief Review: I'm not a fan of round tortilla chips. However, these nachos were very tasty. The scallions were a nice touch. The portion size was smaller than expected and some naked chips remained at the end.

5.15.2008: Nachos at Half Pint

Restaurant: Half Pint

Location: 76 West 3rd Street @ Thompson
Type: "Nachos"
Ingredients: Homemade tortilla chips topped with melted cheeses, black beans, guacamole, sour cream & salsa
Cost: $7.95
Rating: 6

Brief Description: There were fair-to-good bar nachos. Great presentation and plentiful toppings. However, half-way through the nacho tasting all those plentiful toppings were gone leaving dry and bland chips. Despite the low rating, they were good enough to eat two plates when accompanied with the many half pints!

4.19.2008: Nachos at Double Day Cafe

Restaurant: Double Day Cafe

Brief Review: Tasty nachos. The nachos were pretty good. Most of the ingredients were cold, but the triple dip side dish was a creative addition.

4.13.2008: Nachos at Mama Mexico

Restaurant:
Mama Mexico
Location: 2672 Broadway (at 101st Street)
Type: Mama Nachos
Ingredients: Corn tortilla chips, topped with shredded chicken, along with refried beans, melted cheese, and pickled jalapeños. Served with lettuce and guacamole.
Cost: $9
Rating: 6

Brief Review: These were enchilada nachos; nachos that contained enchilada ingredients and were very messy and soggy. However, they were very yummy! The one downside was the portion size - it was pretty small, but not pizza nachos small. If the portion size was bigger, these nachos would have easily scored a 8 or higher!

4.2.2008: Nachos at Murphy and Gonzalez

Restaurant: Murphy and Gonzalez
Location: 21 Waverly Place (between Mercer and Greene), NYC
Type: Nachos Gonzalez

Ingredients: Tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, tomato, guacamole, chicken, refried beans, and jalapeños.
Cost: $7.50 + $2 (for chicken)
Rating: 6
Brief Review: There nachos were the perfect size, but the toppings were very separate from one another. Plus they were dry and lacked cheese. The sides of pico de gallo and guacamole were nice, but would I would have preferred the toppings on top of the nachos.

3.27.2008: Nachos at Grand Saloon

Restaurant:
Grand Saloon
Location: 158 East 23rd Street, NYC
Type: 23rd Street Nachos
Ingredients: C
hili, Jack cheese, salsa, sour cream, scallions, & jalapeños
Cost: $8.95
Rating: 6

Brief Review: These were better than glorified chips and salsa nachos, but not by much. The chili had nice flavor. However, the small dolups of guacamole and sour cream didn't go too far. Lots of naked chips left over.
